The tiny fortified village of Castelo Rodrigo, 3 km south of Figueira de Castelo Rodrigo, was built by King Dinis in 1296. It still has its encircling walls with thirteen cubic turrets and three remaining gates, including Traitor’s Gate (Porta da Traição). In 1580 Philip II of Spain annexed the Portuguese crown and at one stage the Spanish sympathiser Cristóvão De Moura became the Governor and built a huge palace. This was burnt down in revenge by the locals in 1640 at the time of the Restoration. The remaining walls still allow one to imagine how the palace and the fortress must have looked.
