Located approximately 32 km north of Castelo Branco and close to Alpedrinha (see separate entry), Castelo Novo has a beautiful setting in the Serra da Gardunha. Its name comes from the 12th century castle, badly damaged in the great 1755 earthquake, built to replace an earlier fort; the keep is now a clock tower. The medieval town hall (Paços do Concelho) in the Largo da Bica, has an 18th century Baroque fountain against its façade, with the coat of arms of the King João V (1706-1750). Do see the Lagariça, a large rock tank, where grapes were trodden to make wine.
