Castelo Mendo is located 34 km west of Guarda. It is encircled by walls with six medieval gates, the main being flanked by two towers and guarded by two stone boars; little remains of the citadel. Rebuilt in the 12th century by King Sancho I, on the site of earlier fortresses, the castle was enlarged in 1229 by King Sancho II, who also granted the license for a fair. This was the first regular free fair in Portugal and the original storehouse still exists. The town’s name derives from the 14th century first Governor Dom Mendo Mendes. Restoration work in the village has begun.
