The impressive Castle of Évora-Monte is situated on one of the high points in the Serra de Ossa and dates back to the 12th century when the Moorish settlement was conquered by “Fearless Geraldo”. The first charter was granted to the settlement in the 13th century (1248), and subsequently renewed in 1271. The Italian Renaissance style fortress was commissioned by Duke D. Jaime in the 16th century and is a unique monument within Portuguese military architecture. Four imposing circular towers, one on each corner, contain a regular quadrilateral form. The whole is surrounded by Manueline sculpted stone ropes.
