The Viana do Alentejo Castle is an octagonally-shaped fortress which was considerably remodelled in the 15th century. During this reconstruction the battlements were reinforced. The castle interior area includes the Parish Church, a Mudejar-Manueline construction bearing the Cross of the Order of Christ, a shield filled with five smaller shields, and the armillary spheres. Inside the castle walls is a Renaissance cross showing two quite moving figures, a Pietà (agony of the cross) and the Virgin Mary suckling her child.
