Terena Castle, declared a national monument in 1972, is small in scale, but well worth visiting. The Castle suffered considerable damage in the great earthquake of 1755, but underwent repairs and renovations in the early 70s. The construction is attributed to D. João I, the monarch who bestowed the title of town on Terena. The castle’s best preserved areas comprise several walls and some important buildings such as the Keep. The main entrance is intact and flanked by two towers.
