Built in the 17th century on a rocky headland off the coast opposite the Porto de Pipas, the Castelo de São Sebastião was the main defence of the bay of Porto Pim. Built in the sixteenth century on the orders of the king, D. Sebastião, it formed, together with another three small forts along the coastline from Monte Brasil, an invincible defensive system. The port had been a favourite target for the many pirates who knew of the great treasures that passed through it. The castle currently houses the Faial Eco-Library, a centre to raise awareness of the need for environmental protection.
