The construction of the Castelo de São Sebastião started at the end of the 16th century. Overlooking the historic harbour of Porto de Pipas, this Italian-style fortress looks back on a turbulent history. Taken by Castilian troops in 1583 and re-conquered by the Portuguese in 1641, it was restored by King Dom Pedro II at the end of the 17th century. Underground accommodation was added in 1830 and it later became a military hospital. From 1936 it served as a quarantine ward for 30 years. Although it is not as imposing as the fortress of São João Baptista, it provides splendid views from its ramparts.
