Sines Castle was built on a cliff overlooking the coast during the reign of King Pedro. Building started in 1362. Sines is the birthplace of Vasco da Gama, who was born at the castle where his father Estêvão da Gama was the local alcalde. Vasco da Gama was given feudal rights over Sines on his return from India. The remains of the original mediaeval structure include the walls, battlements and the keep. The walls include Visigoth architectural elements that formed part of a church built before the seventh century. The interior of the castle has two painted wooden ceilings.
