The Castelo de Santiago do Cacém stands on a hill, overlooking the town of Santiago do Cacém. Originally of Arab origin, this outstanding monument was completely rebuilt by the Christians in the 12th century. The castle is notable for its magnificent cubic turrets and crenellated barbican, which encircles the castle walls. Adjacent to the castle is the parish church, which was founded in the 13th century by the knights of the Order of Santiago. Its Romanesque-Gothic southern portal still remains from this time.
