The settlement of Santa Justa dates back to 3,000 BC, the Chalcolithic period. The Castelo de Santa Justa has a walled structure with circular towers. Remains of circular dwellings are to be seen inside and outside the ramparts. Archaeological excavations have shown that this was the site of intense economic activity connected with copper melting and working, as well as weaving and milling of cereals for flour. On top of the surrounding hills there are Iron Age (800 BC) quadrangular burial chambers fashioned out of slabs of schist. Nearby are the mines of Santa Justa, which were worked from the town.
