The Castelo de Portel is a fine example of preserved 14th century military architecture and is well worth visiting. Considerable changes and additions were made when the castle was rebuilt in the 16th century by the architect Francisco de Arruda. As is very typical of Portuguese forts, it has the shape of an irregular octagon. Although the keep was begun in the 14th century, it was only completed in the 16th. One of its features is the large vaulted Gothic rooms.
