Ouguela Castle, one of the defensive forts along the border with Spain, is perched on top of a hill, approximately 250 metres above sea level. The walls of Ouguela Castle mark the boundaries that once enclosed the mediaeval settlement, a settlement that expanded beyond the walls and along the slope of the hill. Integrated within one of the wall sections is the Church of Nossa Senhora da Graça (Our Lady of Grace) which has a curious triangular façade.
