Noudar Castle, listed as a National Monument in 1910, is approximately ten kilometres from Barrancos. Constructed in 1308, it was sited on the border with Spain and was strategically important during the many wars of conquest between the two countries. Once the most important town in the region, Noudar ceased to exist in 1825. Within the castle one can see the cistern, ruins of several houses, the 17th century Church of Nossa Senhora do Desterro and the "canhas" - subterranean passages from the castle to the streams of Múrtega and Ardila. The hexagonal wall is also worthy of notice.
