The Castelo de Mourão was ordered to be built by King Dinis to protect the region from attack. Situated close to the River Guardiana, little now remains of the 17th century fortifications which were once built within Mourão Castle, but fortunately for today’s visitors, the wide mediaeval wall still exists. Constituted of marble, slate and granite, this is a wonderful example of mediaeval architecture. Certainly these outer walls would have deterred all but the most determined of invaders.
