Marvão Castle stands on the Serra do Sapoio, one of the highest points in the Serra de São Mamede, guarding the frontier with Spain. The castle and its walls are well preserved. Sections of wall remain from the time of the Christian conquest led by D. Afonso II (12th century) such as the Romanesque doorway of the keep (Torre de Menagem), the Gates of Treason (Portas da Traição) and the small cistern. At the end of the 13th century, D. Dinis strengthened the fortifications resulting in the pointed-arch gates and the town wall.
