The ancient upper town of Estremoz is dominated by the keep, also known as the Tower of the Three Crowns. This edifice rises to 27 metres (90 feet) and is made of marble, the so-called white gold of Alentejo, which has been used for construction since Roman times. The tower dates from the 14th century and was constructed as part of the towns fortifications ordered by King Dinis. The palace, church, chapel and armoury are also to be found inside the castle area. Opposite the keep is a statue of Queen Isobel, who was made into a saint.
