Just northeast of the Largo Santa Clara stands the castle built by the Moors in the 13th century on the site of an earlier Roman fortress. The castle was enlarged in the 15th century (1488) by the addition of a massive keep. The views from the bastions are quite breathtaking. The fortress perimeter has the shape of an irregular polygon and is, at its maximum, 1,000 metres in diameter. There are three main entrances to the castle - the Porta da Esquina, Porta de Olivença and Porta de São Vicente.
