The Castelo de Castelo de Vide is surrounded by the town’s whitewashed houses. It dominates the surrounding landscape and is cannot be missed from a distance. Significant sections of the defensive walls and the keep still remain standing, giving an impression of how impenetrable the town must have been. In the Rua de Santo António, inside the castle walls, are the old lodging quarters of the castle’s garrison. Built against the fortified structure with unrendered dry stone walls and chimneys without bricks, these were once homes for those charged with the town’s protection and wellbeing.
