The Castelo de Campo Maior dates from the mediaeval era when Campo Maior became a fortified town. There are several surviving sections of the castle, these include segments of the wall and the North Tower. Near to the tower are many large boulders, remnants of earlier buildings. In the 17th century the walls were fortified and adapted by Nicolau de Langres to include bulwarks, doorways, barracks and bridge protections. The Western Tower is decorated in Manueline style.
