Situated about 13 km southeast of Tomar on the River Zêzere and 10 km upstream from its confluence with the River Tagus, is the Barragem do Castelo de Bode. The dam was built between 1946 and 1951, initially to serve the first of Portugal’s hydro electric power stations; it now supplies water to more than three million people. Still unspoilt, it created a beautiful lake for boating, fishing, bathing, yachting and other water sports. Canoes, wind surfing boards water skis can be hired on the western side from the Centro Naútico do Zezêre. Cruises are also available.
