This splendid hill fort dominates Belver on the River Tagus. Circular in shape, it still preserves the partly crenellated walls, as well as some of the turrets that used to form part of its perimeter. The main gate dates from the 15th century and has a semi-circular arch. The castle construction started in 1194, in the reign of King Sancho I, and was completed in 1212. It was restored in the 14th century. There is a beautiful carved 13th century reredos in the castle chapel and a balcony named for Sancho I gives a magnificent view of the Tagus valley.
