Beja Castle was built by King Dinis in 1310 on the site of Roman fortifications. During the 16th century, renovations resulted in Manueline features being added, such as the twinned tower windows that look out onto the Praça de Armas, the entrance to the castle. The imposing Torre de Menagem, with battlements and a narrow walkway running around the tower, is now the symbol of the city. Inside are three floors with ogival doors and elaborate vaults. From the top, reached by a spiral staircase, visitors have an outstanding view of the city and countryside.
