Araiolos Castle is a rectangular enclosure, containing the keep and clock tower, and was built under the orders of the king, D. Dinis (1279-1325). The 14th century fortified walls, erected to protect the town, are still in excellent condition. In the centre of the walled zone is a 16th century parish church, the Igreja do Salvador. This church is an important part of the town’s artistic heritage and houses some extremely beautiful paintings. Although the area inside the walls would once have contained the town, the church is the sole survivor of these earlier buildings.
