The Alvito Castle is undoubtedly one of the most curious buildings of its kind in Portugal. Construction began in 1494 during the reign of D. João II, but it was only completed in the reign of D. Manuel II. It was designed by D. Diogo da Silveira, the 2nd Baron of Alvito. The building is quadrangular, with an inner courtyard completed by four semicircular towers in the corners. On the main façade are the Fountain Tower and the Bell Tower. The windows have double horseshoe arches surmounted with bricks, a relic of the typically Arabesque influences in this palatial architecture.
