The Castelo de Alter do Chão was reconstructed in 1357 by D. Pedro I, as is stated on a marble plate on the main gate. From this time onwards the town developed around the castle. The building still continues to dominate the town, standing, as it does, in the main square. The castle was built in the shape of a quadrangle, with high crenellated curtain walls protected by five cylindrical towers, crowned by battlements, conical pinnacles, Gothic portals and the tall square Keep, which is divided into two floors and is roughly 44 metres high. The castle was classified as a National Monument in 1910.
