The Castle of Aljezur was constructed by the Arabs in the 10th century; however archaeological discoveries show that the site had been occupied since the Iron Age. This was one of the last castles in the Algarve to be conquered by the Christians. Built on a hill, and visible from miles around, the castle is in the form of a polygon with two towers, one square and one round. Inside the thick walls, there is a well covered by a vaulted ceiling. At the base of the hill is the Fonte das Mentiras (Fountain of the Lies) named after a Moorish legend.
