The site of the Castelo de Alcácer has 5,000 years of history dating all the way back to the later Neolithic period. Archaeologists have found a variety of important cultural remains from different cultures, including the Phoenicians, Romans and Moors. The central fortress was adapted during the Middle Ages to form a convent. The castle overlooks the River Sado, which runs between a vast green valley. Part of the imposing structure has been converted into a pousada and offers restaurant facilities. Various sections still remain of the mud and stone wall that once surrounded the entire town.
