The Castelo de Alandroal was built by D. Lourenço Alfonso, 9th Master of the Order of St Blessed of Avis, in obedience to King D. Dinis. Its construction was completed in the year of 1298. The architect was a Muslim artist by the name of Galvo. During the period of civil war in Portuguese history (1383–1385) that began with the death of King Fernando I of Portugal, who left no male heirs, and ended with the accession to the throne of King João I in 1385, Pêro Rodrigues was Lord of Alandroal and protected the town.
