The Castelo da Amieira do Tejo is one of the best preserved of its kind in the Alentejo. Built in blocks of cut granite, the castle is a quadrilateral, surrounded by a barbican and flanked by four square towers of different sizes. The keep has two windows, one of which is mullioned. The other is a pointed arch with decorative moulding. The castle is a landmark and well worth making the trip to view. While in the area, try to visit the dam at Fratel (Barragem de Fratel), one of the beauty spots which should not be missed.
