Castelo Branco is a handsome town of Roman origin, which was handed over to the Knights Templar by King Afonso II in 1214; it is a good base from which to explore the border region of Central Portugal. For some, one of the lasting impressions of Castelo Branco will be the exquisite silk embroidery and particularly the colchas (bedspreads). The Atelier-School of Regional Embroidery, established in 1976, is housed in the Francisco Tavares museum. Additional attractions are the 18th century Paços do Concelho, with an armillary sphere decorating its façade and the City Park (Parque do Cidade) opposite the Bishops’ Garden.
