Built in the 17th century on the orders of Dom João de Melo, the Bishop of the dioceses of Coimbra, Elvas and Viseu, Caso do Paço is distinguished by its façade and domed tower. However, it is inside that the real interest lies for it contains one of the world’s greatest collections of Delft tiles which were taken from a shipwreck in the late 17th century. There are about 8,000 tiles and most of the walls of four rooms are tiled, depicting warriors with gaudy plumage, country scenes and religious activities.
