The 17th-century Casa do Espanhol is a reminder of the time of the Spanish occupation. Listed as a national monument, the house was the home of Captain Peter de Mendonça commander of a military company in 1641. The building resisted the two great earthquakes of 1841 and 1980. The House of the Castilian as also it is known has a Baroque main church boasting some noteworthy gilded woodcarvings on its altars and beautiful (azuelos) glazed tiled panels of religious and biblical scenes.
