The 18th century was a time of great prosperity for Setubal and, in particular, for the Brotherhood of Mariners and Fishermen who, early in that century, funded the reconstruction of this building. The associated patron saint is the Dominican São Pedro Gonçalves, known as Corpo Santo and Santelmo, guardian of fishermen and sailors. Outstanding features are the 18th century tile azulejos to the hall, the gilt work and tiled floor detail to the chapel, the painted ceiling alluding to the patron saint and the azulejos in the sacristy. The building is also used as a gallery for temporary exhibitions.
