The present gardens were mainly laid out in the 1930s and 1940s and, whilst little remains of the original gardens, the earlier romantic style has been maintained. The great 19th century camellias remain and are a winter highlight of gardens, considered amongst the finest in Portugal. The best known feature is the Cedar Tunnel planted in 1941; it is now 35 metres long by 7.5 metres high and requires special ladders for shaping. Orchards and fields stretch beyond the formal gardens of this well maintained estate. Casa de Mateus is famous for its delicious jams as well as its wines.
