The beautiful Casa de Mateus, a showpiece attraction of Vila Real, is located 4.5 km east of the city. The house, which features on the label of Portugal’s famous Mateus Rosé wine, was built in the first half of the 18th century for António José Álvares Botelho Mourão whose descendants still live here. This great example of Portuguese Baroque architecture is attributed to Nicolau Nasoni (1691-1773). The Mateus Foundation is very active in culture, including offering 11 six month residences to budding artists each year. The harmony of this outstanding property is captured in its pool with a central sculpture.
