To the east of Vitorino Nemésio’s birthplace and almost at the end of Rua da Misericórdia, stands the Casa das Tias (translated as the house of the aunts). This is where Nemésio was raised, a place he frequently mentions in his works. Since 1994 a bust of the poet on a pedestal has marked the house as a tourist attraction. The property was originally built in the 18th century, but was completely rebuilt after the earthquake of 1841.
