The Carmo fountain, constructed in Renaissance style by Mestre Gonçalo Lopes in 1583, is one of the best known and oldest monuments of its type in Guimarães. Originally built for the Toural, it was inaugurated there in 1585 where it remained from 1585 until 1873. The elegant three level fountain was then moved to its present home in the square dedicated to Martins Sarmento (1833-1899). It was re-erected in front of the house where the celebrated archaeologist, a specialist in the Iron Age in the region, died.
