Work started in 1713, with construction of the Carmo church continuing throughout the 18th century. The façade and twin bell towers are imposing features. Inside the church is a riot of Brazilian gold leaf. The church contains important religious statuary, including the nine statues of the Triumphal Procession by the Algarve sculptor Manuel Martins. The Chapel of Bones, built in 1816, is a bizarre sight, with its walls lined with the skulls and bones from the friar’s cemetery: a grim reminder of the mortality of life.
