The church is part of the former Carmelite Convent, founded in 1657 by the 4th Duke of Aveiro. The building was only completed in 1738 and is typical of the religious architecture of the mannerist and baroque periods. The police occupy the former cloister. Plain on the outside, the church is notable for the paintings on the nave ceiling, which depict scenes from the life of the Carmelite reformer Santa Teresa de Jesus and the blue and white azulejo panels of religious scenes. Note also the pictures of saints of the Carmelite order in rich gilt frames.
