Situated in the Serra de Sintra, about 9 km from the historic centre of the town, Capuchos Monastery was built in 1560 by Dom Álvaro de Castro. Also known as Santa Cruz or the Cork Monastery, the latter name derives from the fact that the cells and other buildings are lined with cork. The Franciscan friars carved the chapel, also insulated with cork, out of solid rock. Note the inlay work to the altar and the 17th Century frescos by André Reinoso. The monks abandoned the monastery in 1834; it remains a remarkable testimony to their austere form of life.
