Capelas is a village overlooking the sea with a beautiful natural swimming-pool. Wonderful panoramic views of the northern coast of the island can be gained from the hill called Morro das Capelas. The village was founded on February 12, 1592 under carta regia of King Phillip II of Spain (Phillip I of Portugal). The church dates from the 16th century and is a pretty chapel worth visiting. Capelas was upgraded to market town under Carta de Lei on July 3, 1839. It also has a small port.
