Within the protective crenellated barbican walls of the Castelo de Santiago do Cacém is the São Pedro Chapel. This attractive religious building, which was built during the 7th century, was in place before the Arab occupation of Santiago do Cacém and predates the castle. It is possible that its survival as a place of Christian worship was due to its being used for non-religious purposes until the town was reconquered by Christians in the 12th century.
