The Capela de Nossa Senhora da Vila Velha is an absolute gem standing in the middle of nowhere. Once a hermitage, this little chapel is found north of Fronteira on the N245 heading towards the river. The plain whitewashed, almost austere, exterior hides an exquisite display of azuelo tiles and gold leaf inside the building. The altar stands under a dome beautifully painted with religious images and is surrounded by azuelo panels. A statue of the Virgin Mary takes pride of place in a niche above the altar.
