Campo Maior is situated very close to the Spanish border. The town’s name comes from the Roman period, although the period of Muslim occupation is clearly visible in the whitewashed houses, with borders and window and door frames painted in either blue or ochre. Originally part of Spain, in 1297 the town became Portuguese territory. One of the most interesting festivals in Portugal is held here - the Festa das Flores (Flower Festival). Thousands of people visit to celebrate with the townsfolk. The Ossuary Chapel, built in 1766, is one of the only three chapels of its kind in Portugal.
