Tradition has it that the Battle of São Mamede, which took place in 1128, started in São Torcato to the northeast of Guimarães. At this battle Alonso Henriques, who became the first king of Portugal, defeated his mother Teresa to win control of the county of Portucale. This event led eventually to the political independence of Portugal. In 1996 an artistic monument was erected at Campo da Ataca (the field of the attack) to celebrate this event. It is located just outside the village of Aldeo, which is about 4.5 km northeast of Guimarães.
