The Gothic Calvário Chapel, also known as the Santa Cruz Chapel, was built in the 15th century by Prince Henry the Navigator, who was the Lord of Covilhã. In the 16th century, Prince Luis, the son of King Manuel I, donated a silver monstrance containing a relic of the Holy Cross (now in the Santa Maria parish church) and he also commissioned restoration work. Internally, there is a sculpture of Christ Crucified, wood gilt carving and the wood panelled and painted ceiling portraying scenes from the life of Christ.
