Calheta is the island’s second biggest town and is situated in the centre of the southern coast. It is an appealing little town in a beautiful, tranquil setting, with its neat houses stretching along the coast and climbing up the slopes of the high surrounding cliffs, enhancing them with beautiful colours. There are some old manorial houses that survived the earthquake of 1980 and the 17th century parish church has an attractive façade. Calheta’s harbour was extended, yet it still remains a small port with a charming ambiance. The island’s only ethnographic museum dealing with history, culture and traditions is in Calheta.
