Calheta is located 31 km west of Funchal and the man-made beach there has golden sand brought in from Morocco and Figueira da Foz on mainland Portugal. There is a large marina where canoes, windsurfers and catamarans can be hired and boat trips are also available. The water is crystal clear and facilities in the area include bars, restaurants, cafes, toilets, changing rooms and first aid facilities; the beach is also used for volleyball. Following the development here in recent times, it can get very crowded at weekends.
