The Caldeirão is a crater resulting from the volcano that gave birth to the island. It was active for the last time about two million years ago. There are splendid views, with the green of the pastures contrasting with the blue of the sea, at the north-eastern crater rim. From the Miradouro do Caldeirão viewpoint, the views down to the 300 m deep crater bottom are brilliant. Boasting an impressive 3.5 km circumference, this gigantic crater has two lakes, with a few tiny islets, of which the islanders like to say that they are reflecting the islands of the archipelago and resemble a map of the Azores.
